How do I get my XBox to connect to my router and then the internet?

I am trying to connect to XBox Live. I have an ethernet cable that does work. It will connect to the internet when I hook it up to my computer. However, when I plug the cable into my XBox, the XBox can not connect and I don’t know why. Please help.
